Training investigation exhibits LGBTQ-identified college students from greater danger compared to straight-identified college students

New research findings reported in the October 2011 issue of Educational Researcher highlight differences between LGBTQ- and straight-identified youth in health outcomes and educational equity.

The peer-reviewed scholarly journal is one of six published by the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

University of Illinois scholars Joseph P. Robinson and Dorothy L Espelage, who conducted the research, found that youths who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) are at a greater risk of suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, victimization by peers, and elevated levels of unexcused absences from school.

Their rigorous analysis of LGBTQ subgroups showed that bisexual youths appear to be particularly at risk. They also found that gaps in school belongingness and unexcused absences are significantly greater in middle school, which suggests heightened early risk for LGBTQ-identified students.

From a policy perspective, Robinson and Espelage believe that their study lays the groundwork for new research in the development, implementation, and effectiveness of programs and policies, aimed at improving the educational .

Summer Loving: Americans think about Sex More in the Summer

My grandfather was a psychiatrist who specialized in couples counseling and I remember him once telling me that he thought people were more likely to hook up in the summer because it was hot, they were wearing less clothing, and inhibitions were down. Okay, he didn’t actually use the phrase hook up but you get the point and apparently he had a point. A new survey of key word searches on Google suggests that June and July are not just about swimming and barbecues but porn and prostitutes as well.

Researchers analyzed the keywords used in Google searches between January 2006 and March 2011. They looked at keywords related to finding a mate (such as "eHarmony” and "Match.com”), prostitution (such as "call girl” and "escort”) and pornography (such as "porn” and "boobs”). As a control measure, they also looked at the number of searches for neutral keywords, such as "dog” and "windshield.”

They found that there are two times of year that Americans become more interested in sex—the brightest summer days of June and July and the darkest winter days of December and January. Searches for prostitution-related keywords were 2.78 percent above average in January and July and mate-seeking searches were 5.67 percent above average during these months. Similarly, searches for pornography were 4.28 percent above average during December and June. (Data on searches about prostitution in March of 2008 were thrown out because they were 35 percent above average which researchers attributed to the Eliot Spitzer scandal.)

This research confirms other data from over the years that suggested Americans were having more sex in certain months based on STDs rates and birth records. Still, none of the research has been able to tell us why this is the case. Some have suggested that yearly variations in sperm quality and hormonal fluctuations are responsible for these spikes in interest. Research into birth records has suggested a natural tendency to give birth in the late summer or early fall. The author of this study, which was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, points out that "…if that was the only reason, there’d be no reason to watch porn or find a prostitute.” He speculates that the increase in sexual activity is about being around people and points out that summer tends to have more social activities as does December which includes holiday gatherings and shopping crowds.

Now, a new review article written by University of Michigan psychology professor Terri Conley and her team of graduate students -- Amy Moors, Jes Matsick, Ali Ziegler and Brandon Valentine -- examines how such gender stereotypes fueled the sexual revolution started by women in the 60s, now carried on proudly by Carrie and her gang.

The review article, published in the latest issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, challenges the assumptions and myths that people have about sex and the roles that men and women have in the bedroom. According to the authors, the take home message of our review article is that people should not take gender differences in sexuality at face value.

They defined students who demonstrated risky music-listening as those who listened "to music at 89 dBA for at least an hour per day.” Previous research has linked this kind of music listening not only to noise-induced hearing loss but also to "increased feelings of isolation, depression, loneliness, anger, and fear.” In this study researchers compared young adults with risky music-listening habits to those who "listened to music responsibly.” They found that those who frequently listen to loud music through ear-buds on a digital music player were:

1.99 times more likely to say they had used marijuana in the last four weeks;1.19 times more likely to smoke cigarettes daily; and1.10 times more likely to have sex without using a condom every time.

In addition, they compared students who attended noisy concerts and clubs to those who listened to music more responsibly and found that they were:

5.94 times more likely to have consumed five or more alcoholic drinks in a row at some point in the last four weeks;2.03 times more likely to have sex without using a condom every time; and1.12 times more likely to smoke cigarettes every day.

Before we dismiss this as adults just not understanding the lives of today’s teens, the researchers were quick to point out that they weren’t suggesting that loud music was a gateway to these other behaviors or blaming it for causing these behaviors. Moreover, they noted some practical uses for this information suggesting public health experts could use it to "design practical interventions, such as handing out condoms along with earplugs at concert venues, or by printing messages about alcohol abuse on concert ticket stubs.” Finally, they suggest that this data can be used by manufacturers to create digital music players that produce high quality sound at lower dBA levels.
